The Stanford Management Company (SMC) invests through the Merged Pool that oversees the majority of its investable assets. Its portfolio includes diverse equity-oriented strategies: domestic and foreign public equities (27%), real estate (8%), natural resources (7%) and private equity (30%). Private equity is maintained at 30% of the Merged Pool based on its risk-return criteria. The Merged Pool was valued at $29.6 bn as of June 30, 2019.The private equity division operates through selected external partners for early and later-stage investments. According to the university’s latest investment report, the SMC is working to improve its investment portfolio that has become over diversified during the last four years, making it difficult to maintain quality and drive superior returns. The number of active partners has been reduced to 75 including 37 new ones added in the last four years. The new partners have generated a net internal rate of return of 29.3% over the last four years.

The firm secures TV media coverage and cash payments for its investees, as the investment arm of German media group ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE that has a total monthly TV audience of 60m across seven free channels.In 2019, SevenVentures provided 1,000 advertising hours to 70 businesses. The firm’s media contributions are worth the equivalent of €3m–30m over a period of two to four years. SevenVentures also runs the SevenAccelerator and currently has 18 active portfolio companies. Recent investments in 2021 include the $54m Series B round of Austrian refurbished electronics goods marketplace Refurbed in August and the €35m funding round for German telemedicine platform Wellster Healthtech Group in June.

Listed and based out of London, Standard Chartered Bank, or StanChart, has operations in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. It has about US$60 billion of assets under management, which it hopes to grow to more than US$100 billion by 2020.

It has invested mainly in biopharmaceuticals, healthcare, new energy, new materials, advanced manufacturing and AI. The company has invested in more than 300 companies, about 60 of which have already gone public or been merged/acquired. Early-stage tech startups account for half of its portfolio.It is headquartered in Shenzhen, with branches in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. 

Founded in 2016, Wave Ventures is a student-run Nordic investor supported by VC partners, angel investors and tech founders as advisors. Based in Helsinki, the VC provides pre-seed and early-stage funding to promote startup innovations for future generations. Its current portfolio of 17 startups includes participation in the SEK 2m pre-seed round of Swedish power-bank sharing startup Brick Technology in March 2021 and seed funding of German co-working space proprietor Twostay in January 2021.

E²JDJ was founded in New Orleans in 2020 with an agtech and foodtech focus, including in the areas of cellular agriculture and synthetic biology. It has six startups in its portfolio and makes diverse investments. Its most recent disclosed investment was in the $4.7m July 2021 seed funding round of NovoNutrients, the US-based biotech producer of alt-protein from fermentation using CO2 and other emissions.
