Singapore, the place to start and grow a cellular agriculture startup

A country that imports over 90% of its food supply, Singapore has turned to foodtech, including cellular agriculture, to safeguard food security, supported by proactive regulators

The Asia Pacific is home to 18 cellular agriculture startups. Singapore, one of the smallest countries in the region, is home to seven of them. The cohort, including Southeast Asia’s first cell-based seafood company Shiok Meats, and TurtleTree Labs, one of the first companies creating human breast milk in a lab, account for more than half of the total funds raised by all the cellular agriculture startups in Asia Pacific.

Singapore government agency Enterprise Singapore (ESG) is working to further increase the number of cellular agriculture businesses by partnering with accelerators and VCs at home and abroad to nurture startups, according to Bernice Tay, director of food manufacturing at ESG, which supports the development of Singapore’s small and medium enterprises.

Cellular agriculture startups in Singapore have already attracted a long list of global investors and accelerators, including Big Idea Ventures, GROW, and Lever VC. Eat Beyond, whose portfolio includes TurtleTree Labs and SingCell, a cultured meat contract development and manufacturing
